On Friday May 1st Saint Vincent’s celebrated the Child Welfare League of America (CWLA) Children's Memorial Flag Initiative with a flag-raising ceremony. Launched in 1998, the nation-wide initiative directs attention to the tragedy of violent child deaths as part of a national initiative to reduce child mortality. The symbol of the observance is the presentation and display of the Children's Memorial Flag.
Just returned from an organizing meeting for a new youth arts center. The interim planning group chose the name YEAH! Youth experiencing artistic hope! The planning group grew out of a BOLD initiative to spark more options for youth to participate in positive activities. Reid Latham of South Easton, MA is not your typical 8 year-old when it comes to having a birthday party. Back in March, Reid’s mother, Nancy, contacted Saint Vincent’s to say that Reid had decided not to receive birthday gifts; he wanted donations in honor of his 8th birthday to go to a charity. Reid and his parents, Steve and Nancy, discussed different charities, and the Latham’s had been touched by the work done at Saint Vincent’s. Mrs. Latham’s aunt, Mary Balleste who passed away several years ago was instrumental in naming the Memorial Garden at Saint Vincent’s in honor of her son, Peter. So, as Mrs. Latham commented, Saint Vincent’s “seemed very fitting all around.”
The Fall River Fitness Challenge held its 2009 Finale at the Eagle Restaurant on May 9th celebrating the conclusion of the four-month series that began on January 10th. Over seventy-five participants and their supporters got to her remarks from Fitness Instructor Amy Jones, Mark Kruger from the NBC television show "The Biggest Loser, 2008 Challenge winner Daryl Parrent and Healthy City Fall River coordinator Dr. David Weed.
