Support and Preserve the History of Fall River

The Preservation Society of Fall River LogoThe Preservation Society of Fall River strongly encourages support of the Community Preservation Act (CPA).

No matter what part of Fall River you are from, everyone can identify dozens of historical and beautiful places, many of which have been neglected for so long that their value might be questioned. Our history and architecture is one of our premier resources that distinguishes us from most other towns and cities across the country. The CPA could very well be what puts Fall River back on the map; our chance to turn the tables.

The CPA creates designated local funding that must be ear-marked for open space, historic preservation, community housing and recreation projects. No such funding has truly been afforded to our city's budget since prior to the Great Depression. If ratified during our next election, the funding is created by a 1.5% real estate surcharge. The surcharge will average $20 per year for homeowners. Exemptions will be allowed for the first $100,000 of every property, low income households and eligible seniors. The surcharge is matched by the state depending on Register of Deeds collectibles. The CPA budget would make it much easier for Fall River to apply for matching grants for many projects that have been poorly funded in the past.

Recycle a Bicycle Program

Mass in Motion-Fall River is seeking donations of used, retired bicycles for their "RECYCLE A BICYCLE" program being held this summer at B.M.C. Durfee High School, and continuing in the fall with the Applied Physics Class with the Class of 2016.

In the program, students are taking bicycles and refurbishing them. They learn about bicycle mechanics, bicycle safety; learning the rules of the road from the Fall River Police Department and receive a bicycle helmet. Finally with bicycles restored, students will learn how to navigate safely through the city. Those who complete the program successfully "Earn a Bicycle".
